Dividend Stocks

Many investors like to own dividend stocks, which can provide a steady source of ongoing income.  The way dividend stocks work is the board of directors of the company declares that a portion of the earnings of the company be distributed to share holders of a class of stock in the company.  Most companies declare cash dividends, but they can also declare dividends in the form of additional shares of stock, or in actual company property.

Dividend stocks that most long term investors are interested are shares in safe, stable, and secure companies, with reliable income and earnings.  Most dividend stocks provide a quarterly dividend, or in other words, send investors a dividend every three months.  There are also dividend stocks of companies that monthly dividends, as well as other companies that provide annual dividends.

Dividend stocks can help smooth out the returns of a stock, because they typically provide a regular cash return that reduces the hit of a stocks price when it’s down, and adds to a stocks return in your stock portfolio when the stock price is up.

Investors that want a regular stream of income from their dividend stocks need to consider not just the yield of the dividend stock (dividend yield is calculated by dividing the annual dividend payments from a company by the price of the stock), but should also consider the timing of the dividend payment.  For example, if you owned ten dividend stocks, and they all paid out their dividends in the first month of a quarter, you would not have any dividend payments coming in for the remaining two months of the quarter.  To solve this issue, many income investors try to build their dividend stock portfolio with stocks that have different dividend payout months.   Another way dividend investors can smooth out the dividend income from their portfolio is by owning stocks that pay dividends every month.

Dividend stocks provide a stock portfolio with income that can augment capital gains, and should be considered a valuable addition to an investors income portfolio.
